About
A quick introduction to the site and the author behind the essays.
Charlotte Bassett
Charlotte Bassett is an interdisciplinary historian whose work explores the relationships between the landscape, the country house, and people in Scotland at the turn of the eighteenth century.
Her research is best reflected in her book, The Estate and the Country House in Scotland, circa 1700: a Case Study of Sir William Bruce’s Hopetoun House, forthcoming with Edinburgh University Press (September 2026). It examines how the country house was built alongside the surrounding estate and how this affected contemporary socio-economic paradigm shifts.
Charlotte loves history and wants to rethink how it’s taught. Rather than drilling dates and events, she wants to create an environment where themes and ideas can be absorbed. She nurtures an interest in knowledge and understanding of the past. Her ethos is that history teaches us about ourselves; it helps us understand who we are.
This site is a space for sharing her love of art history and history through shorter essays drawn from this broader research.
